Yes, folks, you heard it right. Apparently Steven Soderbergh is planning a musical version of Cleopatra with non-other than Catherine Zeta-Jones. We had heard he was planning on doing something together with her, but did anyone call this one? Don't recall hearing about this before.

This has been bandied about for a while now. Supposedly Justin Timberlake is also involved. It sounds like a hoot that will either be a surprise hit/cult movie or a stinker that will go down in flames. I'm sure we're all hoping for the former. Hey, with Hugh in a toga, how could it be anything else?

It really sounds like a bad choice to me-look at Viva Laughlin-he thought it was a great idea and even one of his most adoring fans(me)thought it was not good!!!
I am just wondering about his choices-maybe Palermo is the wrong person to advise him!!The fans are going to give Wolverine a chance-oh well who knows I thought K&L,Someone like you,amd Swordfish were good!!! |

Let Soderbergh experiment on someone else's watch - not Hugh's. This sounds like a horrid idea.
As a friend of mine in L.A. and sort of on the fringes of the business noted, Hugh continues to have a lot of good will toward him, even in a town where good will is related to the money you generate. He's not noted for the big bucks, except for X-Men, and that's such an ensemble and has such a solid fan base going in that he is rarely credited with being even partially responsible for its strong opening. Don't you think that many actors have directors they want to work with, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with money or being a smash?! Maybe I'm naive here, I don't work or know anyone in the business but as someone who appreciates a creative mind, I would think to work with the likes of Luhrman, Soderbergh, Speilberg, Aronofsky, Nolan (and I'm not naming all of those amazing men who step behind a camera and make something creative and unique happen in front of it) is incredibly rewarding. I think Hugh appreciates a creative mind and likes the unusual and unique, sure the producer in him wants to see big box office numbers but I'm sure that isn't why he is in the business and I respect him for his choices. Whatever reasons he has behind them. For me, if i was in his shoes, it would be because of the creative mind behind the camera and being a story person it would have to be a great story with interesting and compelling characters.
Hugh is choosing things that interest him. And with that comes risks. Kudos to him for making interesting career choices. I don't see his star fading just because some of these choices weren't box office smashes. |

MM, absolutely, actors have directors they want to work with, and there are many stories out there (like Australia) of actors being involved simpley because of the director, with no thought to the script. And I do respect Hugh's choices (Van Helsing excepted) thus far. There are fewer films more experimental than The Fountain, and I love that film even if it made no money and was panned as much as praised, if not more. Soderbergh runs hot and cold with me and this one seems like a real stinker. But it's not my choice to make. LOL! I'll wish the project well, no matter who is involved.

Hugh has decided not to join the movie project, according to Variety --

I hope that after his varied talents have had more public exposure after the Oscars hosting, that a more fitting movie musical project related to his triple-threat talent will come up Jo |

Wishful thinking --
Maybe they can contemporize CAROUSEL and change the role of Julie Jordan to a feisty one ( hence, some tempestuousness in their relationship) - and maybe he can convince Kate Winslet to finally do a movie musical, with him! Feisty relationships, wife-maltreatment, crimes -- those are still contemporary issues. Can this work out -- especially if they go back to the darker drama of the play before it was lightened by the music of R&H? To give it a more contemporary vein Maybe Kate could be lured in -- remember how they sang " Singin' in the Rain" on The View when they promoted FLUSHED AWAY together? Maybe Bill Condon ( scriptwriter for CHICAGO, producer for DREAMGIRLS and now producer for the Oscars night) and Hugh can collaborate on the project -- or some other movie musical project? As far as I'm concerned, he could have told them he was washing his hair during that time. LOL! I'm just glad he opted out of this one. Jennifer |

I'm curious to see how this project turns out. I'm just curious to see how it turns out without Hugh. I think it's good that he didn't sign on. Although I am quite sad that I won't be seeing him in 3D anytime soon. Not unless he decides to do something with Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers because they seem to be quite obsessed with 3D. lol

Sounds good to me, as long as they don't tamper too much with the music. Have you ever seen the Charles Boyer version of LILIOM? It's on the extras of the movie DVD (50th anniversary). I'd pick Audra McDonald for "Julie". |
||||
|
Except Audra is not generally known to movie audiences, unfortunately.
And the music definitely stays! Maybe a little change in some lyrics - but very minor. I would love to hear Hugh sing the reprise of IF I LOVED YOU -- "...And you never will know...how I loved you...how I loved you " *Sniff, sniff* Jo |

Yes, but she's on a weekly T.V. series.
|

Still won't be a box office draw, I'm afraid!
And she might be a bit too old to be Julie. In the theatre, people are willing to suspend disbelief, but moviegoers are less forgiving. Jo |

Yes, Jo, don't these lines break your heart:
"Now I've lost you Soon I will go in the mist of day And you never will know How I loved you... How I loved you." Someday, maybe on film....? Ellen |

I think Julie should be older. She's and old maid working in a mill. Billy is her ticket out. |
||||
|
That's why I think Kate Winslet might be good for the role. She is not a topnotch singer, but she can act and has strong screen presence. She doesn't look too young... but young enough to have borne a child who will be teenaged in the second act.
It is good to talk about the possibilities...but since this movie remake has not been heard of since it was announced ( several years ago?) and there has been no update from Hugh, it is disheartening to keep hoping and not know Jo |

I love Audra. I'm a huge fan, and she has such an incredible voice. We saw her in concert twice last year, and I spoke with her for a few minutes. She is lovely!
She already played an "old maid" in 110 in the Shade, so she could certainly play a slightly older Julie Jordan. BTW, did anyone see the great TV-movie version of Raisin in The Sun? I saw the show on Broadway, and they did a great job transferring it onto the small screen. Audra is a great dramatic actress as well! Cheryl |
