He can have the classiest show in the world, but if he's playing in Vegas, it's cheesy. He should do it in NY or London. Then it won't look like he's "retiring".
Vegas is not the cheesey place that most of you seem to be picturing. It really is thriving, lots of big musical acts are playing there, there are some really lovely theaters as well. I am not a big Vegas person, but Eastcoasters, it's not the retirement place that it used to be. It's becoming more happening and hip. And appealing to a younger crowd. I think you need to give it a chance. When was the last time any of you were there? And by what I got from the article was that this venue hasn't even been built yet. Did I read that wrong?

I guess that is what we're curious about...what is Vegas like now? To us, the unknowing, we need some data. Who has seen things there and what were they like? We only have stereotypes and hope beyond hope that we are wrong about it. I supposed I shouldn't be saying we here, I really mean me. Why is it that people still travel to Vegas to get married by Elvis? Help us out here.
And...any tidbit of information, real or hypothetical is discussion material. That's what we live for.

I've been recently and I still don't like it. But I don't like casinos period--I find the environment depressing and all the supposed entertainment over-hyped and uninspired. It's just a whole false universe literally without any daylight, but I'm sounding like a prude. Atlantic City is even worse (and not safe either--we had a sales rep attacked in our Trump hotel there).
So Hugh is about the only reason I would go either place, except if I had to go on business which is not uncommon.
I stayed at the Circus Circus RV park with two dogs and two kids and a husband about 4 years ago for one night. We enjoyed walking the strip, saw the Pirate ship show which my kids loved, rode the inside roller coasters and went and saw the white tigers and just people watched. also spent a lot of time at the pool. The evening was enjoyable, but family orientated. And since I dont' gamble it wasn't my cup of tea. But i love all the new hotels with themes. And at night it's beautiful. During the day not so much. and it's damn hot in the summer! We couldn't even walk our dogs across the parking lot during the day, it hurt their paws. It's basically an adult Disneyland. And like i said, not really my thing. Getting married by Elvis...well to each his own. I can't begin to explain the mentality of my fellow countrymen for the most part. I don't even try to. But doesn't it seem like two different worlds? I am a westcoaster born and bred, and I do feel a world away a lot of the time. I have never lived in snow, oh, except the small spurts in England when I lived there, I don't really know real cold or anything about driving in it. I have grown up wiht a beach nearly at my backdoor and no real city life. Public transport is so foreign to me here, although it does exist. And I go barefoot 3/4's of the year. A coat? I don't own one. And Las Vegas is a common weekend getaway where I come from, for just about everyone in every age group. Except me, obviously. Ah, well, we are a diverse bunch...the human race!

Why, Why, do I feel this same obsession with this hunk of a Hugh Jackman??? I understand your dilemma completely and the worst part is that I am too old to have this craziness. I saw our man in May and have been wild ever since.
as much as i love to watch hugh in this role he is destined to play other parts. he has such great versatility that i think he has only begun to show the true depth of his talent. i would not want to see this role define him, after all he is not peter allen, nor {do i think} does he want to be.
quote: "Point is, do you think a one-man "Vegas-type" show would be a good move for him?" One-man show? Yes. Vegas-type? Please,no. Taking into account what some of you have said about today's Vegas (I haven't been there for about 10 years), it's the stereotypical "vegas show" that I'm objecting to: big hype, big glitz, smoke and mirrors and lights, so to speak. I've not seen a show there in forever, but I did see a clip of Celine Dion's show on Oprah -- Oprah was raving about it, but the clip I saw didn't thrill me -- it looked way overdone to me. But of course that's a small clip viewed on a small screen in my small family room. But I hope this is just a rumor. Imo, he doesn't need glitz; doesn't need special effects or smoke and lights. The guy is dripping with talent, and I just don't need the glitz getting in the way. I know that's the way of theater and concerts now, but I'm such a throwback, I just want to see the performer. I'd actually much rather see him do something like his Carousel concert thing again. I'd have loved to have seen him and Audra MacDonald on a stage together -- all that talent... All that being said, would I go to Vegas to see him? No doubt... Cath
I don't think a one-man show would be very good for him. I would much rather seem him go back to broadway. Vegas is so much different than NYC. I think he should go back to do movies for awhile while he is doing well. And can you see Oscar living is Vegas ? I thought they wanted to go back to Australia for awhile.

quote:Originally posted by hughjfan: I'd rather see him being Hugh, playing himself, than him in any movie or musical playing in any role, no matter how good it was.
Watched Kate and Leopold last night for the first time. I take back what I said above. He was terrific! More romantic lead roles for him please, rather than super action heroes.
First-Kate and Leopold is my FAVORITE romantic film! Second: we must remember that Hugh has some upcoming projects after BFO and of course, he's talking about taking time off to be with his family, including a camping trip with Oscar. As intriquing as the idea sounds about him performing in Vegas, I don't think Hugh is going to throw away these projects to hop a plane to Vegas to do the one-man show. Besides, the casino-resort isn't finished yet and everyime I've gone there any date given for completion of anything being built has always changed. If and when this does happens, I won't lie to you: I'd be there with bells on!
I think this would be a GREAT move for him because:
1) He could show the world what a great singer he is as "himself" and keep up his singing chops.
2) He could make a ton of money.
3) As someone else pointed out; it would be short-term, so not a huge time commitment.
4) Vegas is not so cheesy anymore with Celine Dion and Elton John there ( who are both making an absolute fortune).
From what I read, this casino is supposed to open in March. Hugh could have this one man show between filming "The Fountain" and "X-3". I wonder if this one man show would include some dancing? I guess we will have to wait and see.

When all is said and done, this decision will be made by Hugh and his agent. So far his agent has served Hugh Jackman quite well: his career is soaring! That's not bad for a 35 (going on 36) year old!

Gee-I never thought of that: doing the show between gigs. Hmmm-could be a definite possibility. Would make my trips more worthwhile(not that they weren't before!).
I'm coming in really late to this, but I agree with Kelly. It sounds like fun. My husband and I don't gamble much at all, but we enjoyed just looking at the casino lobbies, watching that great light/music show in front of the Bellagio, riding that rollercoaster on top of the Stratosphere, and just enjoying the whole glittery atmosphere of the place. (Of course, then we took another five days to see Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon - the type of stuff we usually go for!). The people who said there are respectable acts in Vegas are right. I saw that Michael Crawford EFX show, and it was amazing.
You guys, this wouldn't be a permanent thing. If Hugh wants to give the West Coast the same kind of treat he's been giving us, a week or two in Vegas won't hurt anything! And I'll bet he'd love it. Those tickets would sell out in no time. (And I'd be there in two seconds - we can get some CHEAP flights to Vegas from here.)
I'd say it isn't worth worrying so much about - if he wants to do it, he will. And I think he'd have a great time, make a ton of money, then move on to bigger and better things.
Just my friendly little opinion!!

hmm, I guess if he wasn't there for too longer it won't e so bad. There is actually I think an airline here now that flies directly yo Las Vegas. My family went a few years ago, but we've been talking about going again since we only went for one day and never saw any shows. Hopefully Hugh will be there if we go.
