There's a major broadcasting conference in Vegas that I've been to three times. I wasn't planning on attending again for at least a few years because the budget around here is baaaad, but I may have to tell them I HAVE to go if Hugh overlaps those dates.....Wink

Dawn, I know what you mean!!! But hey, there's always next year's HughFest, like someone else said. Any excuse will do, huh? Big Grin

Personally, it wouldn't matter where he was performing. I have frequent flyer miles and would go WHEREVER to hear a one-man show. If anyone can pull off one, it's him.
I went to Vegas last summer. I don't gamble at all. I just went to check out some of the hotels (travel agent duty). I have yet to figure it out, but a flight from Augusta to Las Vegas is actually cheaper than from here to New York.
I have also heard the same rumor that Brittney Spears is thinking of getting into a contract (Like Celine) in Vegas. So, it is not just for "has-beens". I see Hugh doing limited engagemnents between movies maybe like a week or so at a time. Nevertheless, I will be there. If I can brave the cold in NY to see him during the coldest day of the year (-30 degrees) then I can go back to Vegas in the middle of the summer to see him. Last summer it was 120 degrees and 15 degrees hotter at the Grand Canyon.

Vegas isn't some sort of tacky, career-purgatory place that some of you have imagined, lol. It is a popular tour stop on the concert tours of many current artists, House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, Hard Rock Hotel, the Aladdin theatre, the MGM Grand. last time i was there was in 2002 and prior to that i hadn't been there for a very long time. i'm not a gambler but there is plenty to see and do in Vegas that has nothing to do with casinos. lots of shops, some unique but most are the same as everywhere else in the US, plus a lot of designer stores. there's also a huge, highly touted bookstore with extensive offerings that opened up recently (not a B&N or that type), aimed at those that don't care for the casinos. yes, i did see an Elvis impersonator walking through the casino of our hotel, but he was on his way to work. Lots of people get married in Vegas, especially at the Venetian, and not by an Elvis impersonator. someone asked about Cirque du Soleil, they have three shows there now, "Mystere" (which is excellent) at Treasure Island, "O" at Bellagio, and "Zumanity" recently opened at another hotel. Celine Dion's show is filled with CdS performers as well. there are a lot of very good restaurants, Emeril Lagasse has one at the Venetian, and there is a Le Cirque at the Bellagio, which also has a fine art gallery. Vegas has changed a lot since Steve Wynn started upgrading it, lol. if Jackman were to do a one man broadway-style show i think it could work. the article said it would be a recurring show, not a lengthy contract like Celine Dion's, and it might be something he could do for a few weeks at a time, whenever it fit into his schedule. wouldn't require moving to Vegas. he could do whatever songs he wanted, bring in whatever special guests he wanted. just as long as he doesn't turn into Wayne Newton! it would be something different for him. what the heck, why not? he has an awful lot of options these days, i guess it doesn't hurt to have one more. but there's a big gap between floating an idea and the actual fruition of such, so it may be a long while before any official confirmation.

In my opinion, it isn't really the "cheese" factor but that this guy is an amazing talent and this talent would be greatly wasted in Vegas anytime soon. There is also the family factor.. I doubt this would be a good place to raise a family.. I'm sure that Vegas has it's redeeming qualities but I don't think it's a good fit for Hugh.. but that's just me.. haha.

And now my 2 cents.
My husband's company has taken us on a couple trips to Vegas in the last few years. Whoever said nighttime in Vegas is great was right. It is beautiful, fun and over the top (and doesn't that sound like some of us???) Just walking through the casinos can be breathtaking. Look at the ceilings. Chiluly glass at Bellagio for one, wowze. And speaking of Bellagio, the fountains can keep me entertained for hours!

Kelly and Laurie, right on. A 2 week gig, hit and run. Show the rest of the world who Hugh Jackman is. AND, he'd be singing BROADWAY! All the R&H classics, Sondheim, plus he could do a few from Oz, dance and kick his way to Rio with real Vegas showgirls. He's not going to be up there singing Danke Schoen (wow, how do you spell that?) 8 shows a week for 80 years.

I had been talking for years about taking a family trip (grown kids, no grandchildren yet) to Vegas for a 3 day weekend. Now, wouldn't THAT be a fun diversion for the girls while the boys are losing our money at the slots?

I'm there, Baby!

Random thoughts.......

Strangely enough husband said last night "I don't care if I never see Vegas again do you?" "No" I replied. (We got married there NOT by an Elvis impersonator). Have both now changed minds, would love to see Vegas again in near future. LOL

Absolutely the best kind of showcase for a multi-talented performer and very 'Peter Allen'.

Know I'm going to get hate-mail for this one but imho he should give up the action/sci-fi movie genre totally. Don't think they enhance his reputation as an actor at all.

Andre Agassi has been giving $$$$$ for years for schools in Vegas (his hometown) and I believe he and Steffi Graf are raising their kids there. Think it might be a nice place to be a child.

Admit to being blackjack and 3 card poker player so would have good time when show not on.

Cheers, Candy

Any movie no matter what genre as long as it is well written, directed and acted will enhance an actors reputation and the opposite it is true I think as well. It is X-men and X-men 2 that gained him recognition worldwide and gave him the opportunity to make movies with such stars as Travolta and Ryan.
I am a huge fan of such films and hope he continues to make such films as long as he gets good scripts. I will go see anything he is in though because anything appears in could only improved by his great talent.

Have to agree that his performance level can only enhance a movie and that the X Men thing gave him worldwide recognition and furthered his movie career.

However appearing in such films on a regular basis does nothing to build a reputation as a serious actor working at ones craft. He has been quoted as saying he loves Shakespeare and wants to perform some of the bard's work. That's the kind of role which while not making you the big money, or perhaps wowing the movie-going public, shows off your
acting prowess and hones your dramatic skills.

Goes without saying, this is just my opinion Smile

Cheers, Candy

Right on Kelly! Exactly! Hugh has plenty of time. He can pick and choose any project he wants. It doesn't have to be a blockbuster to prove his talent.

Somebody had to say Vegas. desk

There was a time when I was in Vegas as often as I'm in New York now. It was my home away from home. I even had a childhood best friend that lived there. It's the same driving distance from me that my youngest child is most of the year (He lives with his dad). A driving time I'm quite used to (Every other week and on holidays). It was simply convenient for me to go to Vegas. Then, that one fateful day happened. On my birthday one year, my good good friend and I had an argument in the Monte Carlo. The next thing I know, she's gone with my clothes, money, and ID in her car with her. Yes, stranded in the Monte Carlo on my birthday. It didn't help that I was wearing PURPLE VINYL pants, five inch spiked vinyl boots, and a tight black tee-shirt. It took me three days to get my mother to wire me money for a bus home. You wanna know how I survived those three days without food, money, or extra clothing? Don't ask. You don't wanna know and I don't wanna relive it. I'll just say I don't care if I ever see the Monte Carlo lobby again for as long as I live. And if I ever have to dodge security guards again, I'll crack.

Now, my only trips to Vegas consist of finding cheaper flights to New Orleans than I would find at LAX (Which is about two hours over the same time frame in driving if you take into account LA traffic).

If Hugh does Vegas, well, the driving would be convenient in the sense that I'm used to that distance, but, I think I'd start a mild panic the moment I stepped foot on the Strip.

Liz-there's always a way! I go to Vegas twice a year. I use Southwest Airlines vacation packages. I've been doing that since 1995. Of course, there are other online websites you go to plan your trip and can be affordable. Of course, there are some other Aussie boys who I go to see when I go there. In fact, I'm well-known around the office for going to this particular show. If Hugh does decide to "do" Vegas, I will be there with bells on!

While it's kind of hard for me to imagine Hugh playing Las Vegas, it would definitely be thrilling to have him on this coast. A mere five hour drive away! But what I really think would be perfect would be a limited run of BFO as part of the Mark Taper season at the LA Music Center--it's a small house, again, no bad seats (and, not coincidentally, I get season tickets every year....) I've seen Big River and Flower Drum Song and Putting it Together and the new Larry Gelbart musical Jazz there, and it is just a splendid space.
wishfully thinking,
Anita
