If this is true, whoo-hoo! A cute rom-com, finally. Isn't this his first since K&L? That's some drought. Here's hoping this one also yield an awards nomination for him.

wow! same here, Ellen! I'm so glad he'll do something openhearted finally.. maybe I'm absolutely out of main stream or something but I don't like films about robots LOL Can't say that I'm delighted with the Avon-man-Idea (or Lipton-man LOL) but it's better than "transformers-180" and much better than nothing though. So, great news! Team

Just dug up this old VARIETY article on the movie project -- http://www.variety.com/article...yid=13&cs=1&nid=2564quote: Posted: Tue., Jul. 14, 2009, 8:00pm PT Hugh Jackman to star in 'Avon' 20th Century Fox acquires comedy pitch By MICHAEL FLEMING
In a high-six-figure deal, 20th Century Fox has acquired "Avon Man," a comedy pitch from "Hitch" writer Kevin Bisch, as a star vehicle for Hugh Jackman, with Bisch to script. Jackman and Seed Prods. partner John Palermo will produce, along with Gary Foster at Krasnoff Foster Entertainment.
Story follows men laid off from an auto dealership. One is reluctantly recruited into becoming an Avon salesman, and while the experience is initially emasculating, he uses his charm and good looks to become a top seller. The comedy takes on a "Full Monty" vibe when the car salesman sets out to save his financially strapped family and town by conscripting his buddies into the makeup business to win a regional contest.
WME brokered the deal, with Bisch managed by Category 5 Entertainment.
It is good that FOX is funding and/or at least releasing the film ( we don't have to worry about it like we are worrying for the fate of The Unbound Captives ). Also, it seems that rom-coms/comedies are back in favor in a big way...and FOX is lolling in money. Jo

Great news! So, Hugh is going from "Where's the logic?" to "Avon calling!" Margie

Now this sounds more like it (I too have a bit of a problem with boxing robots, but who knows? It could turn out to be great and a gigantic hit). But this one? A comedy with a chance to use some of that 'off the charts' charm? Good choice Hughie. Hopefully it will be of some social relevance as well, like Up In The Air maybe? Dealing with the recession, people losing their jobs, their homes, etc. Hope they don't play it all for laughs as in these times, not a fall down on the floor with laughter subject. Not that they can't 'play' with it a bit. As funny as it was, even Mr. Mom had some poignancy to it.

What kind of contest??? LOL - is it like THE FULL MONTY type, as a friend speculates or hopes it might be - and turn the movie into a riot ( including one inside the moviehouse among the female audience) But they could also be like Les Cagelles in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES -- haha! Jo

Well, I don't see them going door to door sans boxers (although they sure would sell a helluva lot more lipstick ) but...a contest between men? Oh yeah. As competitive as they are, THAT could be a riot. Now that I think about it. Grown men trying to out do and maybe sabotouge (sp?) each other in selling lipstick and perfume? That really could be funny. Got to get him some great comedic supporting co-stars though who can act. Guys like Steve Zahn or Jack Black or Oliver Platt or Stanley Tucci. Oh hell. There's a ton of them. How 'bout a guy who's about to retire but they boot him out early so they don't have to give him all of his pension? Could you see a Jack Nicholson playing that? Okay. My imagination is running away with me. Time to stop. Avon calling.

Here's another side of the coin - I just saw this feedback on one of the movie sites that talked of this movie project : quote: This is great news for the direct sales industry. Of course Avon will do huge things with this opportunity. You need to understand, Avon does about $11 BILLION per year, with a massive independent sales force. Do you remember the massive early ticket sales for The Passion of Christ? Those sales happen because they did proper affinity marketing within the Christian community. Avon reps globally will buy so many tickets. Mark my words, The Avon Man movie will blow away any other early ground swell marketing we’ve seen before. I’ve got to find a way to get a lead generation system going for Avon, plug, plug… Anyone with a good contact over at Avon?
Marketing this movie will probably be one of the most unique ways seen in the movie industry ...And the product placement fee alone will probably pay for the cost of the whole movie ( exaggerated by me, of course ) - but still, this is going to be quite a coup, marketing- and audience-wise! And think of the merchandising opportunities! I want a solid perfume pendant called AVON MAN Hope it turns out to be a true comedy classic! Jo

One wish: That he be allowed to be an Australian expat in the script so he doesn't have to struggle with an accent and can let all his charm shine through.

In reading the movie synopsis, I could find nothing suggesting a rom-com. Can someone explain where the rom-com is? Maybe there's a bromance with his buddies.

I guess it's not a rom-com, strictly speaking--I was probably just imagining him as a single dad trying to make do for his family with perhaps a romantic entanglement as well. However, it looks as though he'll probably be a married man. Hmmm...but who says he won't find himself on a second honeymoon with his groove back on a financial upswing? So to speak. Scriptwriter, feel free to use that. Ellen

All this talk gets me excited. I hope it is a Rom/Com. I like Hugh in anything but getting back to a hopefully romantic story with some comedy in it seems like a wonderful path. I love Paperback Hero and K&L--they keep me going when there is zero on TV that incites my romantic side. I hope this will be a good vehicle for him--and a great ride for us.
Does anyone watch MI-5? Is it me or does Richard Armitage remind one of Hugh just a little--in the series, not necessarily elsewhere. Very tall, darkish and looming--smart and quick.
