Not sure whether to put this here or on the B'way thread, but here it is.
Hugh and Deb showed up at about five or six minutes before 6 p.m., when the play was scheduled to start (ha--opening nights are never on time). Hugh spotted me on their way to the pap gauntlet, gave me a kiss, I wished him a happy (semi) new year, and he asked if I was attending the play; I answered that I was, "a view from the balcony."
He looked great. Hair is a nice length, and his gray outfit reminded me of the suit he wore on the promo circuit for FLUSHED AWAY. Deb was wrapped in black, as usual, looking very smart.
During intermission, I went down to get a breath of fresh air and noticed Hugh ordering a drink at the bar (quelle surprise). It was so noisy I couldn't tell what kind of drink he got. Deb looked to be abstaining, deep in conversation with Ellen Barkin. They moved away to a little alcove behind the stairs because the bar area was so tiny it became instantly congested. They were talking with an older man. I also spotted Ted Chapin, Dylan Baker and Cotter Smith.
Almost forgot to mention: Naomi Watts was there, of course. She is tiny!
After the play, I was at the barricade waiting to say hi to Liev. Before he came out, Hugh and Deb did. I said to them, "Didn't you love it?" (It was really intense; Scarlett's Brooklyn accent was flawless, and Liev was amazing. I think he has the Tony sewn up). Hugh, very animatedly said, "Everyone was great!" (I agree). Then they hopped into a cab that a security guy had hailed and presumably went to the party.
I'll write more about the play on the B'way thread. Great evening--and it didn't even rain while I was outside.

This is one play that I am so sorry to miss because I don't live over there
It looks like Liev is getting the kind of accolades that usually precede a TONY win. The last one who played the role, in the other revival of the play, was Aussie Anthony LaPaglia ( from Without a Trace) and he won a TONY for it!
Also good to hear the Scarlett Johansson has been getting very positive reviews, too.

Thank you for the pictures and the links! Ellen, thank you very much for your story! Please let me ask a question: how long do you know Hugh? And how long does Hugh know You?
On this pictures he looks like as he had cried. Perhaps it was from the cold. I love this suite.

Hi, Krista. I had my first face-to-face encounter with Hugh in November '03, a few weeks after THE BOY FROM OZ opened. It was my first time seeing the show and afterwards, boy, was I sorry I hadn't opted for "yet another CAROUSEL," as I'd thought the year before, of the Carnegie Hall one-night concert. Then I chalked up another 23 TBFO visits (including four in Oz), popped up here and there at his various public appearances, and saw A STEADY RAIN 20 times. a good number of my visits to shows also included a visit to the stage door.
It helps to live in the tri-state area.

Hugh looks amazing in spite of he has aged appreciably and Deb is pretty as usual! Would love to see that play live very much too..*sigh* (but gonna see "The Musicians of Bremen" in following two weekends ) And yes, I love his scarf too... looks like Burberry, right? off to B'way thread

Yep saw this last week in previews it was excellent. Liev really delivers. in fact all of the players were great. Scarlett deserves praise for her accent.

I would love to see this. Or anything else for the matter I am not a big Scarlett´s fan but I can imagine Liev to be fantastic. When I am reading rave reviews about Liev, Hugh should have chosen Arthur Miller´s play. It seems to be a certain way. I know Hugh wanted a new piece of writing but Miller seems to be accepted by all audiences. *shrugs* I wonder if there will be a place for Hugh among Tony nominees this year.

As the season wears on, I'm afraid that likelihood is growing dimmer and dimmmer. Soon, Denzel W. will be appearing in a revival of FENCES, adding more fuel to the fire. It's an extremely competitive year.

It would be exttremly unfair if only Hugh or Daniel got nominated. I think both or neither. I haven´t seen it (*cries*) but from what I read they were both great and couldn´t do that one without another. I thought Denzel W. wasn´t too critically accepted when he was on the Broadway for the first time?
Liev Schreiber, James Spader, Jude Law, maybe Denzel Washington ( the material may suit him better this time), possibly Hugh and Daniel -- choose your five nominees! Unless Norbert Leo Butz ( another former Hugh castmate - Carousel) gets very strong reviews for the forthcoming ENRON?
What seems more certain is that this will be Hollywood's night at the TONYs when the nominees are called for Best Actor in a Play
I hope Scarlett ( who actually trained at the Professional School for Children in New York, so I am not surprised that she had the acting credentials for the stage) gets a nomination, too.
It looks like Liev is going to be the strongest candidate for a TONY win. He is a very well-respected stage actor on Broadway, so it does not come as a surprise...
And he is just coming on to his own in the movies. On an aside, I thought between Hugh and him, the Wolverine origins movie should have been better received, as their portrayals humanized the comic book characters perfectly.
