His more recent one, with Hugh putting his journalism degree to good use --

Roving reporter Hugh Jackman surprises local shop owners

Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman is more usually seen fighting the forces of darkness, but he's now taken on a practical real-life mission.

The Aussie actor has been out and about in Manhattan in the role of a roving reporter, tackling the issue of fair trade for producers in the developing world.

In the 'guerrilla' documentary the star turns up unannounced at cafés and restaurants to ask vendors about if they are aware of fair trade practices.

Father of two Hugh is deeply involved in anti-poverty initiatives.

After shooting an advert recently on the topic for the UN, he said his commitment was "as an actor... not an economist”.

He is looking to answer questions such as “How is it that a kid dies every three seconds from extreme poverty".

Thanks jo! I know nothing about fair trade myself.. I'll read up on it. Hope we'll get to watch the documentary eventually.

Beats "death knocks" at 3 a.m., doesn't it? That's our Hugh "Geraldo" Jackman.

He told his friend Gus he was tired. This may be a contributing factor. In addition to working hard at rehearsals, maybe he's trying to wrap up his documentary work before the play begins in Sept.

Annoying Ted Casablanca makes innuendoes again - but there is mention of the Roving Reporter at Joe's Pub with his roving crew Wink

Hugh Jackman, getting super fabulous at Joe's Coffee in the Village on the corner of Waverly Place and—where else?—Gay Street. (That's really the name of the street, folks.)

Hugh, who's in the Big A. getting ready for his play, A Steady Rain, with Daniel Craig, was with a cameraman shooting what looked like a documentary. Incredibly handsome in a tight black polo, H.J. chitchatted with bum-staring passersby, including a gal who mentioned to him that she's married to an Aussie. Hugh replied that they make such "good husbands!"

Do they, Hugh?

Especially when they're manly enough to star on B'way and get a hot fix in the gayest 'hood this side of the Castro, right?

While Hugh was more than pleasant getting his coffee fix...

So have I! Hugh had a bit to do with it. In an issue of Oprah, he mentioned 5 influential books, and one of them was "Banker to the Poor." I read it and was amazed. I've started with lending through Kiva.org, but am always looking for other ways to work.

Yes, it seems that Nobel Laureate Professor Mohammed Yunus has exerted a huge influence on Hugh's personal advocacies. I also read the book "Banker to the Poor" ( and even gave a copy of the book to two people I know who I thought would be also inspired by it - it turned out one of them already has read it Wink).

I used to be a banker and was slightly involved in some micro-finance projects because I was a member of the Bank's corporate foundation which included community development projects in its agenda.

What was amazing was, like in Prof. Yunus's empiral observations, the rate of repayment experience for this kind of experience was almost incredible ( tell that to someone who has been involved in the bank's management credit committee!). Very commendable!

Okay, I'm going to sound dumb here for a second and admit I have no idea what micro lending or fair trade is. Anyone patient enough to explain?

I have either recommended the book or given copies to several people as well. It works!

Alicia, I'm not sure I can explain micro-lending. To read about it, go to www.kiva.org. That is the program I lend through. Also look at http://www.grameen-info.org/ which is Muhammad Yunus' organization. BTW, Prof. Yunus recently recieved a Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with my other hero, Nancy Brinker, founder of The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Check out http://www.fairtradefederation.org/ to read about fair trade.

Hugh has said that he had also read Jeffrey Sachs's END OF POVERTY ( a bit more technical compared to Banker to the Poor)...and I think they met when Hugh visited the UN, as Mr. Sachs does consulting for the UN.

I think Hugh's level of commitment is beyond simply making personal appearances for certain advocacies ( which is usually the case for many celebrities involved in major social outreach projects). One proof is his direct involvement in the documentary he is making at the moment.

I think I understand what it is now. It's sort of the same as the charities that allow you to purchase goats and cows and chickens to give to families so that they can use their milk and eggs to sell and support themselves, right?

That's a very emotional video and it sounds like a wonderful charity. So many people in my family have been diagnosed with cancer, young and old, and I think any organization devoted to helping people, especially kids, stay positive during such a difficult time is wonderful. It makes me very proud to be a fan of someone like Hugh who really does put his money where his mouth is.
