Guess who's doing an opening musical number at the Oscars--despite not really being a movie star? Neil Patrick Harris, that's who. Gheesh. He's OK, but I see that as a slap against Hugh. Martin Short--whom I like--is his costar in the number.

I dunno. Can you seriously keep yourself from commenting about my "hag" posts? It seems everyone else has the ability to ignore them, but you've got a fixation.
The rest of you, If you want to be irrational, jealous haters of people who aren't Hugh, then to each her own.
I didn't mean anything malicious, by the way, in my initial report. I just want everyone to miss Hugh's razzle dazzle just a bit. Built-up demand is always the sweetest.

Even if the rumor about NPH were true (and it now sounds like it's not), that doesn't mean Hugh wasn't asked first. But frankly, seeing as how he hosted the entire show last year, I'm sure he wouldn't want to be relegated to just one opening number. A short cameo would be more appropriate. With his recent jaunts to LA, a cameo is entirely possible.
Look, apparently Hugh was asked to host the Oscar's this year, but he turned it down. He's got alot on his plate right now, and the prep time needed to prepare is ENORMOUS. He knows first-hand! If you compare his schedule a year ago this time, he was practically free as a bird. Basically, he was just biding time until he had to go out and promote Wolverine. This year is a very different story with all of the upcoming film shoots. I don't blame him for saying no.
Sorry.....I know this may be a moot point now.....but
I've gotta jump in here.....I love NPH, and think he did a very credible job at the Emmys. It probably would have been a fun bit.
And as much as I love Hugh, it is impossible for him to do every entertainment job in the world. That said, I find it hard to think that every job he DOESN'T get is a slap in the face to him.
I love that we are so supportive of Hugh's career, but maybe we need a little perspective. I bet he says "no" to lots of these things himself.

Ellen, I know that, my response wasn't to you, it was just surprise at the basic idea that anyone would hope that the show would fail because Hugh isn't hosting it. That's really immature, not fair and not cool at all. I guess I shouldn't have worded it the way I did. Sorry for that.
Besides, because of Avatar, I think people are going to watch it, regardless of who is hosting it.
Wow, someone is lacking of humor here... Or maybe my sense of humor is strange. Anyhow, I don't think it's mature either to judge other people's opinions whatever they are and insult them. I don't think I insulted anyone with my comment. I'm never insulting so I'd rather others not be insulting towards me. Btw, I'm 21 and don't think I've given the impression in this forum that I have a 5 year old kid's brains.
I think you're right, Kris, that the audience will be relatively large becaue of AVATAR--and probably also because 10 movies are nominated this year.
On a related AVATAR note, here's proof positive of what a megahit movie can do: I read yesterday that Sam Worthington is ShoWest's Male Lead of the Year. Pretty good for a relative neophyte.

UPDATE: OSCAR SPOILERS, PART 4? By MIKE FLEMING | Category: Actors, Awards, Oscar | Tuesday March 2, 2010 @ 10:29am
UPDATE: Neil Patrick Harris tweets, “I will not be performing a duet with Martin Short to open the Oscars. Misinformation, I’m afraid. Should I maybe pull a Kanye, mid-show?”
EXCLUSIVE: Stop reading if you want to be surprised, but I know how the Oscarcast will get underway Sunday night. (That is, if Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman don't change their minds because of this spoiler.) The first 2 men on stage won’t be hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Instead, the show will open with a silhouette of a pair of guys only … wait for it ... they're Neil Patrick Harris and Martin Short. Anything can change, but that unlikely duo has been rehearsing an original opening song and dance routine that is one of 2 big production numbers choreographed by executive producer Adam Shankman. (The other involves extreme street dancers who’ve performed on So You Think You Can Dance where Shankman is a judge and who’ll hoof to samplings from the Best Original Score nominees.) Though Harris is predominantly a TV star, he's an awards show regular. Short also is a TV regular these days, but he has a long relationship with the broadcast’s musical director Marc Shaiman, who put together the opening number. In fact, Shaiman/Short collaborations go back to Saturday Night Live, and include The Martin Short Show and the one-man stage show Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. I heard the producers had approached Robin Williams, but he declined.
Maybe it was an option that was considered but the producers decided not to go with it?

If he did that, it would be the funniest Oscars show ever.
I love NPH, I wouldn't have a problem at all with seeing him at the show on Sunday if that rumor had been true.

NPH did a good job. Not a HJ job, but a good job. Adam Shankman must have gotten the entire idea of the opening from TBFO. I'm not one to bash anyone or anything because Hugh isn't a part of it, but gosh, it sure was reminiscent wasn't it? Who among us couldn't help but feel someone else belonged on that stage for that particular number? It seemed a bit plagaristic (is that a word?), but I guess nothing is original.
