I was actually surprised that when the news came out at first, there were some slightly positive reactions from some film sites.
Here's one -- http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/...on-budget-too-small/
*Could it be because it is viewed by some sites as "male-centric"? *And some do consider the combination of Spielberg as producer, Disney as distributor, and Jackman as actor as positive. It is only Shawn Levy who is not getting them excited. This message has been edited. Last edited by: jo, |

Levy is the only thing that makes me uncertain. I don´t understand why did Spielberg hire him. There are at least ten another directors who could do this - including Spielberg himself.
And I know that Spielberg isn´t too lucky in his choice when it comes to directors - Joe Johnston anyone? But then again, I think in the latest wave of remakes, this is at least an original idea, and it is also a thing that can persuate some people. I hope this isn´t one of Spielberg´s weaker moments. Hugh is "lucky" when it comes to weaker moments... |

I can certainly understand Hugh's logic with this decision. You don't turn down a leading role in a Spielberg film. Though his sci-fi films have been weak for many years now.
Can someone tell me about Shawn Levy? I don't know anything about him. Has he directed some duds? |

He is not "bad" like "bad". But I would say he is average - or maybe didn´t have the right material to prove us wrong?
He did both Nights at the museum. I liked the first movie very much and I don´t think it was bad at all. It was a family movie so not much work there. Or the first Pink Panther remake....which was bad... I don´t think he shouldn´t get a chance but if this really isn´t a family movie but more a futuristic drama, then it´s something he has never done before. So it is the real tricky part. But maybe the lack of faith into this material, into the director, Hugh´s ability to draw audiences...this all can kick everybody involved and will force critics to eat their words. It´s still very far away and to say anything good or bad when the movie even doesn´t exist yet is stupid, yet some wannabe critics are doing it. Maybe with a zero expectation, this will suprise all. I hope they can do it because I like the idea. (a sci-fi fan and a sci-fi convention girl |

I haven't seen the Pink Panther remake so I can't comment on it, but do you think it was bad because of Shawn Levy as the director or because they were trying to remake a classic? I love Steve Martin, I think he's hilarious, but he's no Peter Sellers. They really shouldn't have even tried to make a new one. Let alone 2.

I don´t know whose stupid idea to remake Pink Panther it was but it was an awful movie. I felt sorry for Steve Martin and I don´t understand why did he sign up for this. The sad thing is that I read few comments from people who actually liked it To answer your question - I don´t think it was entirely Levy´s fault. With such an idiotic idea and a script, I don´t think even Martin Scorsese could have done better. But it doesn´t help to Levy´s resume so hopefully for Hugh, these days are over for him and taking this movie will be a challenge where he can prove his more than just an average director. |

Since it was Spielberg who called Shawn Levy re the directorial job, maybe he had much faith that Shawn can deliver for this movie, which is the first one released by the reorganized DREAMWORKS and its first team-up with Disney.
I have read that Shawn Levy graduated cum laude from Yale University -- does anybody know if he went to their famous Drama School ( I don't know the exact name)? Jo |

Well, I watched an interview with Eric Bana where he said that Spielberg asked him to be in Munich (which was a fantastic movie) after seeing him in The Hulk (which was horrible). So maybe he can see the talent despite horrible projects.
By the way, does anyone know if the script for this movie is online anywhere? I'd like to check it out. - Alicia |

Alicia -
I posted this on the previous page. It is not the script, but a synopsis and a commentary on the script by the reviewer. The reviewer also says that because the movie will soon be in production, that there is no longer any online access to the script itself. Unless someone here was able to find it earlier ( before it may have been taken down) and downloaded it
Also, in the first post on this thread, there is a sample of the script that was used for auditions. Maybe that can give you an idea of how the dialog and the scenes go? Jo |

Thanks Jo. Sometimes I overlook posts because I think I've read them already and end up missing stuff.
The story actually doesn't sound too bad now. I think if the robots look more like Transformers than Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots (which is what I've been imagining them as for some reason) it might work. Hopefully they'll play up the human aspect of the story and Hugh might actually have a good character on his hands. Either way, I'm more interested in this now than I was before. - Alicia |

What I like about it is that Charlie is a selfish loser, which is an interesting character for Hugh to play. But I hope they will focus on a father/son relationship, because I think it is one things that attracted Hugh to it.

How about getting your kid in the movie, and spending a bit of "quality time" with Hugh yourself?

Hmm... so the first round of auditions did not yield the right young actor for the role?
I wonder if any of the "retired" Billy Elliots ( maybe one of the original trio which won the TONY for Best Actor) would fit the bill? I can't remember the name now of the one I saw at the Imperial, but he was also a very good actor, on top of the electrifying dancing! Maybe that is why they are also holding auditions in the NYC area - as there might be some child actors from the stage or TV who may fit the bill? Jo |

Thanks for the video link. It seems that he must have spent a bit of time sparring in the boxing ring in the background as his hair seemed all wet Maybe he was doing some initial CGI-type of work for REAL STEEL ( to portray one of the robots Jo |
