A commentary on the casting of Hollywood stars for Broadway shows and that of Hugh and Daniel in A STEADY RAIN --

http://www.reuters.com/article...irtualBrandChannel=0

quote:
Celebrities on Broadway -- does it promise a hit?
Fri Jul 17, 2009

By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A slew of Hollywood stars led by Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig will open the new season of Broadway, as producers test whether star power will keep the Great White Way sparkling in tough times.

Jackman and Craig are teaming up for "A Steady Rain," Jude Law will appear in "Hamlet" and Sienna Miller will make her Broadway debut in "After Miss Julie," all opening in the Fall.

Last season's celebrities to take to the Great White Way included James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Geoffrey Rush, Katie Holmes and Will Ferrell.

Stars boost sales, no small matter in the risky business of Broadway, said John Breglio, who is producing the musical "Dreamgirls," which is set to open in November.

"It is absolutely essential now to have a major star, a major star, to put on a play. And unless you have that, it's very hard," he told Reuters. "You know with stars in it you are guaranteed to at least get your money back."

He described as "stupendous" the pairing of Jackman, known for the "X-Men" films and winner of a Tony in 2004 for his role in the musical "The Boy From Oz," and Craig, star of the latest "James Bond" films and a performer on the London stage.

"Just the two of them will sell out every ticket. That is a huge coup," Breglio said.

But he is producing "Dreamgirls" with a cast of relative unknowns and said he believes musicals, more than plays, can still be financially successful without a celebrity.

The past two Tony Award-winning musicals and box office hits "In the Heights" and "Billy Elliot The Musical" did not feature Hollywood stars.

SUCCESS NOT GUARANTEED

Celebrity "doesn't guarantee a financial success or a critical hit, but it guarantees attention," said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League.

But she warned that Broadway is "not cookie-cutter."

"Having a great playwright and a great cast and a previously successful show doesn't guarantee success on Broadway," she said.

In 2006 Julia Roberts made her Broadway debut in "Three Days of Rain" and, while the show was a box office hit, her performance was panned by critics. Jennifer Garner's debut in 2007's "Cyrano de Bergerac" received mixed reviews but the show recouped its investment, a rare occurrence on Broadway.

"A Steady Rain" producer Fred Zollo, a theater veteran, said celebrity came second when it came to casting Jackman and Craig for the new play by Keith Huff.

"It's an extraordinary play, and we wanted to find a couple of extraordinary actors for it," he said.
"The idea of obviously raising excitement because of their star power or selling lots of tickets is terrific and obviously all of us were happy to do that in these tough economic times."

Although the United States is suffering its worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, gross Broadway ticket sales for the 2009/10 season to date, which runs from June to May, are only down 2.2 percent compared to last season.

Attendance is a little more worse off, down 7.6 percent.

The 2008/09 season took in record gross takings of $943.3 million. The Broadway League says the 39 theaters in the famous district contribute $5.1 billion a year to the New York economy and support 44,000 jobs.

SPECULATIVE INDUSTRY

At least 20 shows have already announced plans to open on Broadway later this year, St. Martin said.

Zollo said raising funds for a show was always difficult, regardless of the economy, because it was such a speculative industry. "You can't put a on play in a Broadway theater for under $2.5 million," he said.

History shows four out of five plays do not return on their investment, St. Martin has said.

Arielle Tepper Madover, who is producing "Mary Stuart" and will bring "Hamlet" to Broadway with Jude Law, said productions respond to financial crisis.

One such response is discount tickets, she said, noting there will be $25 tickets available every night for "Hamlet."

Having a star makes a difference, but not all the difference, she said, noting "Mary Stuart" does not have a famous name.

"As a Broadway producer, it's very nice to have someone who's extremely talented, who fits the role perfectly and also happens to be someone whose well known," she said.

She added she was pleased with presales for "Hamlet."

"That's due to the fact that it's Hamlet, the fact that it's coming from the Donmar Warehouse (in London) and the fact that it's Jude Law," she said. "The public is smart and they know when it's right."

"As a Broadway producer, it's very nice to have someone who's extremely talented, who fits the role perfectly and also happens to be someone whose well known," --

Add to that having a previous TONY winner and Broadway sensation - and you have hit a bases-loaded homerun dance

I still haven't received my tickets via e-mail, and it's now been eight days since the orders were placed. I sent an e-mail on Saturday to telecharge, but I guess no action will be taken until Monday. Anyone else still not have their e-mail tickets?

Update, I got a message from telecharge to call them; I was advised that they have to check all orders to be sure they aren't over the ticket limit. I should call them again in three days if I haven't gotten them by then.

Another platform has been launched by Telecharge with which one can place ticket orders, using mobile technology.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/a...rge_Service_20090723

And here's a reminder that regular sales for A STEADY RAIN will commence past midnight of July 24, at exactly 12:01 am of July 25.

Good luck if you haven't gotten tickets to the show yet!

Re Group Sales pricing - it is definitely more expensive to go as a group than to purchase individual tickets.

There is a link on the Telecharge Group Sales page to check the pricing grid. I used a sample Tuesday to get a price grid and here are the results --

quote:
Tuesday, 7:00 PM Regular Price /Group Price

Orchestra 125.00 /137.35

Front Mezzanine A-F 125.00/ 137.35

Mezzanine G-H 86.50/ 95.00

Mezzanine J-K 66.50/ 73.00

Premium 276.50/ 304.00

Maybe this is to discourage brokers from getting cheap tickets?

Front row A of Mezz overhangs row J in Orch, so would be better to get Mezz if you can only get Orch past row J. Smile

Gizzi,

Weekdays ( Tuesday., Wednesday, Thursday) are easier to get better seats to, generally.

Also, if you can still get aisle seats for Orchestra Left/Right, even if it is much further down than J, that would still give you a viewing advantage.

Good luck!

Can anyone help - is Telecharge the only outlet selling tickets once the public sale starts on Saturday 12.01am?

You can get the best price on Telecharge ( assuming the show will not eventually offer discounts) because it is the direct selling arm of the Shubert Organization ( owner of the Schoenfeld). Ticket brokers are already offering tickets, but at inflated prices, even before the regular sale starts.

Unfortunately there will be many people trying to reach Telecharge at the first hour of the regular sale. Hopefully, it won't be the same volume that hit them on the first day of the presale. You can reach Telecharge either by phone or their online site. It was recently announced that the mobile phone is now being used as a selling platform ( see my earlier post somewhere) but this is new and I don't know if this is still on a test-pilot basis.

Thanks jo,

I won't been looking through ticket brokers, just the legit sites. I'd probably resort to buying from a scalper on the street before a ticket broker online. I had great luck (and a bit of fun!) dealing direct with street scalpers when I lived in London, is there a similar market in New York? And if so, do they discount heavily when the show is close to starting? Hehe, I strike a mean deal! Big Grin I'd love to hear of anyone experiences with this in NY.

I guess I wasn't sure whether other websites such as ticketmaster etc also are selling A Steady Rain tickets once the general sale started. I'll stick with Telecharge and see what comes up. Smile

For those who have not yet received their tickets -- either by e-mail or regular mail. I called Telecharge this morning, and was told that there is a four week delay on the processing due to them checking each order to ensure the orders are not going over the limit.

Sparkles,

Although I know there are scalpers out there, my encounters with them have been few and far between. There are usually a couple hanging around TKTS. My larger experience has been "ladies who lunch" who have gotten stuck with tickets from people who opted out of their groups and are trying to recoup. However, I have the feeling that scalped tickets for ASR will be few and far between.

Am I correct in surmising that you are coming from Australia? I know this is unsolicited advice, but for a trip that far, I would think you would want to have guaranteed tickets. Why not get them now, while they are still available from Telecharge? I'm pretty sure there will be no bargain priced tickets to this event!

Good luck!

I agree with Diane, Sparkles Smile

I am also coming from halfway across the world for this particular show and had bought insurance by buying tickets ahead Big Grin

Btw, isn't July 25 12:01 am ( which is the start of the regular sales) supposed to be very early Saturday morning ( right after Friday midnight)? Someone who was very avid to get tickets on ATC ( Hitbycab, Ellen Big Grin) says that he is going for them on Sunday. Unless of course he is not free to do it in the wee hours... Hope this is not confusing some people!

Yes, I was surprised that Hitbycab didn't already get a ticket through Amex. I'm sure some people will find tonight's 12:01 a.m. start to general ticket sales confusing.

Thanks for your concerns dihop and jo. Smile I'd only ever use the scalper option if I was in NY and maybe trying to see the show a second time. Wink

I'm still ummm'ing and ahhh'ing about whether I can go through with a trip to New York. Big Grin I have moments when I think this is a simply fabulous idea and then other moments when I think it is just crazyness to even consider it as New York wasn't really the highest place on my travel "wishlist" until this come along. Egypt currently is my number one. Big Grin

I think I'll leave it in the lap of the gods, depending on whether a tempting enough ticket comes up with the general sale. I don't want come all that way only to be sitting at the back of the mezzanine level. You know why! Big Grin It also doesn't help that the show I am aiming for is the last performance on 6 December. Smile

I see ticket scalpers in the theater district all the time - and I wouldn't advise trying to get tickets off of any of them. I saw one trying to pass off fake Lion King tickets to some tourists on the TKTS line (we stepped in to say the tickets were fake and the guy ran away).

Even the ones who are legit are going to majorly overcharge you, and why feed the scalpers? I would try to get the tickets beforehand, just to be on the safe side.
