Maybe we should start a more specific thread on one of Hugh's forthcoming projects, as details of the production are disclosed?

Ashok Amritraj to strike century with 'The Unbound Captives'
Zimbabwe Star
Monday 18th May, 2009
(IANS)

Indian origin Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj is on the verge of a professional landmark - he is set to start work on his 100th film that, at a budget of $90 million, will be his biggest venture and star Hugh Jackman.

'The Unbound Captives', to be directed by American actress Madeleine Stowe from her own script, will roll at the end of this year on locations in New Mexico and New Zealand. Amritraj, who runs the super-successful Hyde Park Entertainment, produced his first film 'Fleshburn' in the 1980s.

''The Unbound Captives' will be ready for release by end-2010,' the Chennai-born producer told IANS in an exclusive interview in Cannes. 'We hope to close all international pre-sales before this edition of the Cannes Film Festival ends.'

Amritraj's first film as an independent producer was the 1985 movie 'Nine Deaths of the Ninja'. His 100th will star Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson and will be 'a sweeping period epic made in the style of David Lean film'.

Stowe, the star of films like 'Stakeout', 'The Last of the Mohicans' and 'The Magnificent Ambersons', wrote the screenplay in 2002 but could not get it to the screen earlier as a result of several false starts.

'Russell Crowe was to play the male lead and Madeleine herself was being thought of as the female protagonist until she moved into the director's role,' Amritraj said, recalling a part of the screenplay's 'extraordinary history'.

He said: 'I read the script on a plane back from India and was immediately struck by it. As soon as I got off the plane, I called Madeleine's agent and the deal was done.'

The film, Amritraj reveals, is set in the mid 17th century. At $90 million, it will be Amritraj's biggest film to date in terms of scale and sweep.

'We've assembled a truly great cast - Hugh Jackman is a huge box office draw, Rachel Weisz is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for her performance in 'Lovely Bones' and Robert Pattinson is coming off the runaway success of 'Twilight',' he said...

I thought this was going to be a mid-range production budget -- it looks like it is going to be a big one at $ 90 million!

I think the producer might have been misquoted on the timeframe of the story. There were many reports that it took place initially around 1859 and then maybe during the following decade thereafter? So, it is a story in the 19th century. Maybe the history buffs here can confirm when the Texas/Comanche conflicts were at their height Smile

The Variety article which first announced the film project confirms 1859 as the start of the story --

Some blog sites are reporting a script summary which has Rob's character as Rachel's son and say he was kidnapped at age 10 and assimilated into the tribe and is now a Comanche warrior who mostly speaks Comanche and rides bareback.

Birchie,

Let's hope the film turns out to be a real winner -- with great character portrayals and a beautiful storyline.

All the Pattinson fans have already read the script. It is on a lot of boards. His role is in the last part of the movie.
Hugh Jackman is the leading man. YAY!

Interesting kind of people we meet along the way --

*While he was filming AUSTRALIA, I even read some tourism boards, a bit of history of the Australian aborignes and of course dug up a little of what happened during the second world war in the Pacific.

*For WOLVERINE, it was time to reconnect with the fanboys and the whole XMEN universe.

*Now, it is time to beef up on history, period costumes ( I wonder what Hugh wears when he fights with an Indian, as he was once a White Indian in the story) for UNBOUND CAPTIVES...plus we have new friends from the Robert Pattinson ( RobPattz) boards! They can dig up info really fast, so that would be much welcome cooperation Wink

Our admiration for our favorite performer does take us towards many interesting journeys Wink

New Zealand? I wonder if Hugh knew when he did the downsizing joke at the Oscars opening.

hmmmm, I wonder whether he knew or if this was a recent opportunity.

This sounds like it will have more character development than Australia and certainly more chemistry with Rachael Weisz than with Nicole Kidman. I so hope this is a role he can really dig his teeth into.

I was thinking the other day how none of his recent work allows him to smile and banter. He is the "smilingest" guy I've ever seen. Would love to see some of that personality on the big screen....hopefully with Kate Winslet someday.

His last 'happy' movie was probably Kate and Leopold, wasn't it?

Variety reports that the film project was well-received in Cannes, in a buyers market for new films.

Cannes market steady, unspectacular
Savvy sellers adjust to new demands

By SHARON SWART, JOHN HOPEWELL

'Agora,' as well as several major titles, screened in Los Angeles for buyers before the fest and are still looking for deals.

Cannes opened with a rush of acquisitions announcements, but as the fest heads into its final days, it's been a steady, if unspectacular market.

It remains to be seen whether an anticipated flurry of late deals materializes.

The studios and their specialty labels are acquiring very little, but they've been more active in local production and in exploring more flexible mixed-financing formulas with overseas producers.

With the exception of IFC, Sony Classics and Magnolia, U.S. buyers have yet to ink deals on festival films. Several major titles, including "Agora" and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which screened in Los Angeles for buyers before the fest, were still looking for deals.

As always, the right projects with the right elements and budget continue to sell, although there's been a discernible shift among buyers to focus on pics that have a solid greenlight or those that are in production.

"Buyers want quality product," says Orange Entertainment's Mirjam Wertheim, who advises buyers around the globe, including Europe's Indie Circle. "Those projects will always do well. There is an adjustment happening; prices and budgets need to come down, and some sellers or producers got that, and the others will soon as more of their product remains unsold in certain places."

Sellers who priced product competitively have scored. Odd Lot Intl., for instance, inked multiple deals on Nicole Kidman drama "Rabbit Hole," including Latin America (Sun Distribution).

Premium-level product, especially that which is already lensing, did robust business.

Summit Intl. inked deals on Sean Penn-Naomi Watts thriller "Fair Game," "Twilight" followup "New Moon," and romantic drama "Remember Me," starring "Twilight's" Rob Pattinson, in most of Europe and Asia.

Madeleine Stowe's "Unbound Captives," with Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Pattinson, is doing brisk business. Hyde Park presold to the U.K.'s Entertainment, among other teritories.

"The market's concentrating around a reduced number of stronger buyers and sellers, companies with strong financial stability and theatrical and DVD operations and especally strong ties to television," said Harold Van Lier, StudioCanal's exec VP of international sales.

Deals were plentiful but not all sales companies found success. The international sales market has contracted dramatically, so sales agents and producers are moving away from a total dependence on presales toward structuring co-financing, ranging from studio coin to co-production, targeted multiterritory deals, local production investment and soft-money solutions. These options reduce exposure to a troubled sales market.

StudioCanal chairman Olivier Courson announced at Cannes that the Canal Plus-owned mini-major will now approach investors to raise complementary external slate financing, targeting specific slates, pushing annual production investment beyond $270 million a year.

Even with the brief story outline we have so far, this immediately makes me think of the John Wayne/John Ford classic 'The Searchers' - the quintessential western. I wonder if that was the basis for the story or am I completely off base here? Opinions?

I wonder if Hugh is going to grow his hair long for the role. Frontiersman of the period and the Comanche both generally had long hair.
