I wish they had too. That was my first experience in seeing Hugh in person. It was spectacular.

Liz, I am so glad you posted this question because I've been wondering the same thing. When I saw the photos, I was truly hoping upon hope that they had recorded the event for PBS, perhaps. I love Audra McDonald and the two of them together would be such a fantastic force on stage. Maybe they should sign on for a run of CAROUSEL (once Hugh takes a much needed rest) on Broadway?

Excellent post, Kelly, and I'm in total agreement. I love the idea of color-blind casting. Unless otherwise specified in the description, how could anyone deny two talented actors the chance to do what they do best? I've seen Audra in concert here in Chicago and she has a magnificent voice and stage presence. Between that and Hugh's talent and charm, CAROUSEL would be quite the musical to see and I'd be there front and center.

I love the idea of that. This is on something of a tangent, but something I truly think is wonderful about stage is that actors are cast on the basis not of what they look like, but what they can do. When a role is not absolutely ethnicity specific, plays can have such a wonderful casting diversity that is denied to movies. Theatre goers wouldn't bat an eye about a white man and a black woman being cast in the leads, as long as they're good at what they do.
OK, getting off my soapbox now -- just wish the film community could get it together.
Hugs, Kelly
There was a brilliant production of Carousel not that long ago on Broadway. Truly one of the greatest productions I've ever seen. Crap, I can't talk about it without breaking down...it was just so beautiful. Hugh would have been great in it. Michael Hayden was absolutely brilliant, but he just didn't have the greatest singing voice. Functional for the role, but Hugh would have added another dynamic.

Yes, that's so true. Like when Angela Bassett played Lady MacBeth to Alex Baldwin's MacBeth. --Rocki

At least there's a few seconds of Hugh singing the Soliloquy on Inside the Actors Studio.

actually my ticket was $101 just like a Broadways show. And I knew right away that I needed to grab this opportunity to see it, since I had no idea I would ever have the chance to see him on stage again. The worst thing was I had been saving for my daughter and I to have a trip to Walt Disney World and do it the right way, stay in a good hotel for a week etc. Well, you can imagine the dissapointment when I told her...then 12...that I really needed to see Hugh on stage and I wanted to use the money for a trip to NYC. She only wanted me to be happy, so she agreed but she told me recently how at the time she was very upset. But once the trip took place she was glad we went and now wants a trip to NY on a regular basis!
I can still feel the excitement and chills I felt when Hugh stepped out on stage at Carnegie Hall. The incredible presence he possessed. And then telling him afterwards, 'We just want to see you sing more.' and he replied, 'oh, you will, believe me you will.'
I had wanted to hear and see him sing since my Oklahoma CD arrived in the mail in December of2001, and I really never thought I would get to see him on stage. I love his acting, but it's the singing and dancing that really send me overboard. I just melt over a guy that can sing. And now so many have had the chance to witness that charisma, charm, panache and talent on a Broadway stage. We are all truly blessed that we have had the opportunity...but how great it would be to release Carousel. I really liked the way he did 'Highest Judge of All' as well as the 'Soliquoy' and his humor, even in a concert setting was fabulous.
