The Chinese media has been reporting that Hugh will be the lead in a film called "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" produced by Wendi Murdoch (along with Ziyi Zhang and wife of MGM president). The director is said to be Wanye Wang.

The rumor has been circulating for a few days that Hugh was approached for the role because of personal connection to Wendi Mordoch.

They now claim that Hugh is CONFIRMED for the project and will arrive in mid-Feb. The rest of the filming has started and the two lead females actors have already arrived on the set.

Hope it is true. Sounds like a personal favor to the Murdochs and 21c fox and a good use of his long break before RS starts.

If true, is this a cameo role...as the film seems focused on the the story of two female characters?

Dear Lucia, If that is true about "Snowflower" I will be very pleased. We read it in my book club: it was an overwhelming hit. Unfortunately, I will have to dig it out as I have forgotten the plot as I do with most books once I have read them.

I think Hugh is going slightly crazy with no plans until June in Chicago. He is so high energy and making commercials and going to social things is not enough for him. Even, as many of us know, being with our kids 24/7 can become tedious.

I hope this project pans out. I can't remember any caucasian man in that book-it would be fun to see him in asian make-up!

Can't say at this point. The script has been rewritten. Two of the female leads are now American born and involved in a triangular affair with a man. The ancient story was told in the memoir of a grandma or whoever.

The news said the male role is a "heavy" one but I don't know.

A Shanghai newspaper is confirming the project, with Hugh in the lead --

Hugh Jackman to lead, Zhang Ziyi quits
By Zhang Xuanchen | 2010-2-2 | ONLINE EDITION

AUSTRALIAN actor Hugh Jackman has confirmed he would come to China this month to lead in a film based on a Chinese-American writer's novel about love between two women in 19th century China.

The 42-year-old actor will join South Korean starlet Jeon Ji-Hyunand and actress Li Bingbing from Chinese mainland to take the leading roles in the film directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Wayne Wang.

The film, co-produced by Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan has kicked off yesterday in Hengdian, a large film studio in Zhejiang Province.

Wendi Murdoch is the wife of News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. Florence Sloan, a Malaysian-Chinese, is married to MGM chairman Harry Sloan.Li.

The film, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is adapted from novelist Lisa See's 2005 book of the same name depicting how two isolated women at that time found lifetime love through secretly writing poets on fans and embroideries.

Jackman, known from his role as Wolverine in the X-Men series, expected to arrive in Hengdian in mid-February to play.

And another Chinese media confirmation --

Hugh Jackman, Li Bingbing and Jeon Ji-Hyun. The lineup for the film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan has been finalized after some small problems.

The Forbidden Kingdom star Li Bingbing has been confirmed to replace Zhang Ziyi in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which will be directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Wayne Wang, the Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported Tuesday.

Li has arrived in Hengdian, a large film studio near Shanghai where filming is slated to kick off Tuesday, the report says.

South Korean starlet Jeon Ji-Hyun, who was previously reported to have withdrawn along with Zhang Ziyi, still stays in the cast. She has also arrived on the set.

Australian heartthrob Hugh Jackman, the movie's male lead, will join the entourage in mid-February, the report says.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a film adaptation of novelist Lisa See's 2005 book of the same name, which is set in 19th century China and depicts a lifetime friendship between two women.

The English-language film was to be co-produced by Zhang Ziyi, Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan, before Zhang's surprising resignation as producer and lead actress in late January.

Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan will continue producing the film. China-born Wendi Murdoch is the wife of News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. Florence Sloan, a Malaysian-Chinese, is married to MGM chairman Harry Sloan.

Li Bingbing, who replaced Zhang Ziyi as lead actress, is well-known in China but didn't make her international debut until 2008, when she played a white-haired witch in the Jackie Chan-Jet Li film The Forbidden Kingdom.

It looks like that Hugh is looking eastward - with this film and then the Wolverine sequel set in Japan. Will his role for this one be a main one or will he be in a featured role?

Jo

A bit of research -- Various media book reviews summarized on Amazon.com:

Many positive reviews in the USA...but I still could not fathom what Hugh's role will be in this movie.

I was shocked to read these news! Man, Hugh Jackman is he definition of the word unpredictable!! So I did a bit of research and found this page. It's a dozen of reviews about the novel and contains plot details. I haven't read them all yet but thought to share with you. I'm sure every Hugh Jackman fan in the world was caught off guard today with this announcement!!

Here is a summary of the book:

quote:
A language kept a secret for a thousand years forms the backdrop for an unforgettable novel of two Chinese women whose friendship and love sustains them through their lives.

This absorbing novel – with a storyline unlike anything Lisa See has written before – takes place in 19th century China when girls had their feet bound, then spent the rest of their lives in seclusion with only a single window from which to see. Illiterate and isolated, they were not expected to think, be creative, or have emotions. But in one remote county, women developed their own secret code, nu shu – "women's writing" – the only gender-based written language to have been found in the world. Some girls were paired as "old-sames" in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

An old woman tells of her relationship with her "old-same," their arranged marriages, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood—until a terrible misunderstanding written on their secret fan threatens to tear them apart. With the detail and emotional resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha , Snow Flower and the Secret Fan delves into one of the most mysterious and treasured relationships of all time—female friendship.

I'm pretty much excited. I searched google for the director and found out he's won many awards and nominations for his previous work (Bafta, Cesar, Golden Lion and many festival awards) . I'll wait for a Variety and Hollywood Reporter confirmation though. I don't want to get disappointed again. Maybe the film won't be good at all but it sure sounds by far more promising than a movie about fighting robots...

Martha, Unpredictable is right.

Foxie, I agree. They should Change The Name of this movie.

I've never heard of the book before but it does sound rather interesting. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.

But I also agree that they should pick a different title for the movie. It doesn't seem to flow for me.

Same story, from Broadwayworld.com

I would love to start a SPOILERS thread to go along with this general thread. Would love NOT to know the plot or details beyond general stuff when it is so hard to stay off this site.

He continues to take us by surprise, doesn't he?

"Huh" was my first reaction in the morning when I read it. Big Grin
I don´t know what to believe or what to think. Hugh is such an unpredictable guy that I gave up and just take anything at this point.
But this sounds interesting. It´s not a box office material but if done properly, it could be a critically acclaimed movie.
I just can´t see where would Hugh fit in that story. But I know they did some changes in the script and with Wendi Murdoch´s name attached, I guess it would make sense.
I am in a "wait and see" mode again. Smile

A lot of well-received Asian films -- OK, I know this is in English but it is Asian in theme -- have a strong sensuality to the plot. Let's all send strong mental vibes so that in this story the man becomes the object of the two women's desire with scenes amply illustrating their ardor.

Oh, and 3-D wouldn't hurt. Smile

Male nudity wouldn't hurt here, either. I kind of like the title. It just may draw interest.
