I just ordered the book on Amazon.com. I'm really looking forward t reading it. I also ordered the book of the play "A Steady Rain" since I was unable to see the play while on Broadway.
Yeah. My inner voice told me to spell Louis Vit...Vit...as Prada. But when do I listen to my inner voice?
And someone said they didn't think Hugh would travel all the way to China for a cameo. Yeah, he would. Especially if it was to do a friend, Mrs. Murdock, a favor.
While filming Australia, he left the outback and flew to Sydney (11 hr. flight), caught another to Los Angeles (another 14 hrs.), landed midday, went to a rehearsal and that evening performed TWO SONGS at an industry charity event and was back on a plane to the Australian outback before midnight.
Yup. Man spent 50 hrs. in the air in who knows how short a time (with the time change, you do the math), just to do a favor.

It could also make good business sense for Hugh. I have just read on BoxOfficeMojo that AVATAR has delivered $ 144 million to-date in China, making it the largest in box office returns from the international markets. If SNOW FLOWER is a big success there ( as it probably would) and Hugh gets the "unbilled cameo" exposure ( he is likely going to be part of the publicity) in this largest of the international markets, it could help his big budget films immensely, like REAL STEEL and WOLVERINE 2 ( especially the latter, as it is going to be set also in Asia).

Good point, Jo, about this being a sort of investment for his later films. And he'd be a logical person to help out with publicity since the Chinese actresses won't be well known here.
Hmmm...I don't know. Don't want to be argumentative here (who me? argue? pish)
But I'm not sure that an unbilled cameo in a Chineze chick flick is going to help box office when it comes to testosterone driven action films (even in China). What's going to sell Wolverine is...well, Wolverine. It's already a proven commodity. Unless they make a total piece of sh*t, the Wolverine crowd is gonna show up. And if early word on Reel Steele is that it's good, they'll show up for that too.
I still think he's doing this as a favor to the Murdochs.
Oh, no argument that this is going to be a favor to Wendi Murdoch
Just saying that it can also help establish greater exposure for Hugh Jackman, the actor, in the potentially-largest international movie market in the world. I remember his attending the Shanghai Film Festival not so long ago - so, he is obviously courting the movie market there, too.
Btw, it is not always easy to get a movie released in China. I think The Dark Knight had some difficulties getting released there, or did it ever get shown there? (Edit: Just checked BoxOfficeMojo - it didn't make it to China)... They do limit the films that get shown there from international sources, presumably to favor local films.
How did AVATAR and WOLVERINE get shown there -- uhmm...probably because they are FOX releases and Rupert Murdoch has been doing business there for sometime now.
Barb - I'm going with you on this one. As for promotion - I don't see any actor promoting a film in which he has an unbilled role, which by all accounts is a cameo. And I doubt an umbilled cameo by anyone ever has much impact on box office.
i agree w the others who said this is a favor to wendi murdoch. also, the other producer's husband is the head of (MGM?) a smart business move on Hugh's part - and as always, a loyal friend
finished the book and am so curious how they are going to slot him in. I really have no clue. I can't picture a clearly white anglo male anywhere near the villages the story takes place in. So my curiosity is very peaked!
I do think it could be a very beautiful touching film though, done right.

A twitter message said he was at the set of the movie the other day, and it was a club setting, as in "night club". Perhaps he is playing an American in China visiting a nightclub for the evening and encounters the women or one of them. And that may be all he does as to the cameo scene.
