I know several Ozalots went to see Stephanie at Birdland on July 13. Anyone want to write a review?

Yes, how did this week already fly by without mentioning Stephanie J. Block in concert at Birdland! I was at the bar in the good company of Ellen, Annette, Sue and my friend Laura.
I love seeing her on Broadway, but this venue is my absolute favorite: a small intimate space where Stephanie sings as Stephanie and not a character. Monday’s concert was wonderful. She did many songs from her solo CD, accompanied by the songs’ composers. This alone is high praise and an indication of the regard they have for her talent. I’m blanking on who said it, but one composer commented something to the effect that her rendition of his song was the best he’s heard and his favorite. At this point Stephanie called out “Okay, I want a copy of that!” to all those who ignored Jim Caruso’s “no photos, no video, no audio taping” before he introduced her, great fun. Hubby Sebastian stood in the back and you could see the delight in his eyes during her performance and with the roaring audience approval. Margie |

Margie, I think that was Andrew Lippa, composer of THE WILD PARTY.
Stephanie can really hit--and with a bull's eye--some seemingly unreachable notes. She never got to do stuff like in any of her B'way ventures with the possible exception of WICKED. I also loved her comedic number such as "15 Pounds (Away From My Love)" and "Invention," a complicated patter song that is delivered at lightning speed. She looked great, too. You can tell she's happy where she is. I thought emcee Jim Caruso paid her a very high compliment: He said she was probably his favorite person in the world--this from a guy who has toured with Liza Minnelli. By the way, Caruso & LM, along with the other boys in the Kay Thompson number, are going to Las Vegas soon to perform and then record LIZA'S AT THE PALACE for DVD. As we left, we got to exchange hugs with Stephanie as she made her way from the rear exit to the front door for a CD signing. Lots of fun hanging with Sue, Margie, Laura and Annette, too. Ellen |
