Anthony Warlow was my favorite Aussie singer prior to HJ. He's doing mostly opera now and I wish he would come to the states more often.
I like how he imitates different singers on his "Centre Stage" and "On the Boards" albums. Of course since he just played the Phantom he was prepared for the role by recording "Music of the Night". |

I've seen him in a DVD of a Gilbert & Sullivan production and have heard him on recordings. He is indeed marvelously talented. I know he is a favorite of Jo's, too. He must have made a fantastic Phantom.

I've been a fan of Warlow's since hearing him on the concept recording of "Jekyll & Hyde" over 10 years ago. Since then I've acquired all of his solo CDs. He has a unique ability to tailor his voice to each role. His recent appearance as the Phantom was a return to the role as he played it to much acclaim in 1990 in the first Australian production. He will be reprising the role again in 2008.
As for his coming "to the States more often", I don't believe he's ever performed here. From what I've read, he has turned down offers to appear on Broadway, preferring not to uproot his family. There are quite a few clips of Anthony on YouTube. My favorite is his duet with Philip Quast: Lily's Eyes |

Here's another Warlow fan
I have been a fan from way back -- since I first heard him singing the role of Enjolras in the Complete Symphonic Recording of LES MISERABLES ( which also featured fellow Aussies Debra Byrne as Fantine and Philip Quast as Javert...and of course my musical theatre favourite Michael Ball as Marius Fortunately, when I was in Sydney for Hugh's arena show of The Boy from Oz, Anthony was also performing in The Pirates of Penzance at the Opera House. He was not just in glorious vocal form but had also surprised me with his acting - he evoked the image of Captain Jack Sparrow in the role of The Pirate King - LOL! After the show, my Aussie friends, my sister and I waited for him at the stage door of the Sydney Opera House. It took some time before he came out - and when he did, the five of us approached him and asked if he had a few moments. He graciously told us that we could move towards an area near the stage door where he had time for autographs and a chat! I was able to ask him if he was planning to release a new album and he said he was working on a collection of English folk songs together with one of the leads in Pirates ( I hoped I had heard it right, as he had just released "Tenor and Baritone" with Pirates co-lead David Hobson then). I also had time to tell him that I had read recently that Hugh Jackman had seen the production of Pirates of Penzance and that Mr. Jackman said he was inspired by the performance of Mr. Warlow ( which remark seemed to have been a happy surprise for Anthony). Anyway, he is very nice ( quite apart from his great voice). Other than his theatre and standards repertoires, he has done some DVDs - the opera Fleidermaus, the operettas Patience and Pirates of Penzance -- he may have other ones that I don't have. Anthony was classically trained but he crossed over successfully to musical theatre. Also, I was lucky to have gotten a DVD of a concert he has done with Olivia Newton Jones and John Farnham called THE MAIN EVENT. Yes, he performs only in Australia, by personal choice! Hughfan turned me onto Warlow in 2002, I think, and I haven't looked back. I love this man's voice so much!
